  • Gold vs Dollar vs Property vs Bank Savings: Where Should Pakistanis Save?

With inflation eating into savings, Pakistani families constantly debate where to keep money: gold, dollars, a plot, the bank or National Savings? Each has strengths and weaknesses. This guide compares them in plain terms so you can make an informed choice.

Note: This article is general education, not financial advice. Your best choice depends on your goals, timeline and risk tolerance. Consider speaking with a qualified financial adviser for large decisions.

    Gold

Why people choose it: gold is priced in dollars internationally, so it automatically adjusts when the rupee weakens. It is also accepted everywhere and can be sold in any city on the same day. Long-term gold rate history in Pakistan shows strong growth in rupee terms.

Downsides: no income, short-term price falls, theft risk and making-charge losses if you buy jewellery. Read bars vs jewellery vs coins to buy efficiently.

    US Dollar

Why people choose it: a direct hedge against rupee depreciation, and simple to hold in a foreign currency account.

Downsides: cash dollars earn nothing, and if the rupee recovers you lose value. Gold has historically also benefited from rupee weakness plus rising global gold prices, though past performance never guarantees the future.

    Property

Why people choose it: can generate rent and has delivered large gains in some areas.

Downsides: requires a large amount, involves taxes and transfer costs, carries fraud and file-scam risks, and cannot be sold quickly in an emergency.

    Bank Deposits and National Savings

Why people choose them: steady monthly profit, low effort, and Shariah-compliant options exist through Islamic banks.

Downsides: if inflation is higher than the profit rate, the real value of savings falls.

    A Balanced Approach

Many households split savings across several options, for example:

    • An emergency fund in a bank account for quick access
    • A gold portion built gradually through coins or biscuits
    • Income products for regular profit
    • Property only when there is enough capital and proper due diligence

Buying gold in parts reduces timing risk. See the best time to buy gold.

    Zakat and Tax Points

    • Gold, cash, dollars and savings all count toward zakat once total wealth crosses the nisab. Use our zakat calculator.
    • Tax filers should declare gold and other assets in their wealth statement. Rules change, so check the latest FBR guidance or ask a tax adviser.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is gold a safe investment in Pakistan?

It has been one of the most reliable long-term stores of value for Pakistanis, but it can fall in the short term. It is best held as part of a mix.

    Is silver a cheaper alternative?

Silver is much cheaper per tola but more volatile. Check the silver rate today.

Where can I see the live gold rate?

  • Gold Buying Checklist: 12 Questions to Ask Your Jeweller in Pakistan

Buying gold in Pakistan usually happens on trust: a family jeweller, a quick weigh on the scale, a handwritten slip. Most jewellers are honest, but small misunderstandings about karat, stones or making charges can cost you thousands of rupees. Use this checklist every time you buy.

Tip: Save this page on your phone and go through it at the counter. A good jeweller will happily answer every question.

    Before You Go

✔ Check today’s rate. Open our live gold rate and your city page, such as Lahore or Karachi, so you know the fair base price.

✔ Set a budget. Use the gold price calculator to estimate the total including making charges.

    The 12 Questions

    1. “What karat is this exactly?”

Ask for 21K, 22K or 18K specifically, and make sure it is written on the receipt. Learn what the stamps mean in our hallmark guide.

    2. “What is your rate per tola for this karat today?”

Compare it with the published 21K or 22K rate. A small premium is normal; a big one is not.

    3. “What is the exact weight?”

Watch the item weighed on a zeroed digital scale. Ask for weight in grams and tola/masha/ratti.

    4. “How much are the making charges, and how are they calculated?”

Per tola, per gram or a percentage? Get the number in rupees. See typical making charges in Pakistan.

    5. “Is there any wastage or polish added?”

Some shops add extra weight for wastage. Ask whether it is included in the weight or charged separately.

    6. “How much do the stones weigh, and how are they priced?”

Stones, kundan, pearls and beads must be deducted from the gold weight and priced separately.

    7. “Is this piece solid or hollow / filled?”

Bangles and large pendants are sometimes filled with wax or lac. You should pay gold rate only on actual gold.

    8. “Can you test it on the karat machine?”

For large purchases, an XRF test removes doubt. Many sarafa markets offer it for a small fee.

    9. “Will you give a printed receipt with full details?”

The receipt should list: item, karat, gross weight, stone weight, net gold weight, rate, making charges and total.

    10. “What is your buy-back or exchange policy?”

Ask the kaat you would face if you sell or exchange later at this same shop.

    11. “Can I return or exchange it if there’s a problem?”

Clarify the time limit and conditions, especially for gifts and wedding orders.

    12. “When will the order be ready, and is the rate locked?”

For custom orders, confirm whether you pay today’s rate or the rate on delivery day. This matters a lot when prices are moving. Read about what moves gold prices.

    Red Flags

    • Refusing to write the karat on the bill
    • Weighing out of your view
    • Pricing stones at the gold rate
    • Rates far below the market, which can mean low karat or fake gold
    • Pressure to decide immediately

    After You Buy

    • Photograph the item and receipt; keep the receipt safely.
    • If buying for investment, consider whether bars or coins suit you better.
    • Add gold to your zakat calculation if it crosses the nisab.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Can I negotiate making charges?

Yes, often. Especially for large orders, repeat customers and outside wedding season.

Why is the jeweller’s rate higher than the website rate?

Published rates are for raw gold. Jewellers add a small premium plus making charges. Read how the rate is calculated.

  • Bridal Gold Jewellery Budget Guide Pakistan 2026: How Many Tola Do You Need?

Gold is usually the single biggest expense in a Pakistani wedding after the venue. With the rate now above Rs 4 lakh per tola for 24K, even a modest bridal set costs millions of rupees. A clear budget, made early, can save a family a lot of money and stress.

Key tip: Decide your budget in rupees first, then convert to tola using the current rate. Do not decide “we need 10 tola” and hope the money appears.

    Typical Weights of Bridal Jewellery

Weights vary widely by family tradition, region and design. The ranges below are common starting points for 21K or 22K jewellery.

    ItemLightMediumHeavy
    Necklace set (necklace + jhumkay)2–3 tola4–6 tola8+ tola
    Bangles (per pair)1–2 tola2–4 tola5+ tola

(1 tola = 12 masha = 11.66 grams. Convert any weight with our tola to gram tool.)

    Estimated Costs

Using an illustrative 21K rate of Rs 385,600 per tola (check the current 21K rate) and leaving making charges aside:

    PackageTotal goldGold value (approx)
    Simple5 tolaRs 19.3 lakh
    Standard10 tolaRs 38.6 lakh
    Grand20 tolaRs 77.1 lakh

Add making charges on top. Use our gold price calculator for an exact quote.

21K or 22K for Bridal Jewellery?

21K is the most common choice in Pakistan: strong, detailed, and slightly cheaper. 22K has a richer yellow colour and more gold, so resale value is higher per tola, but it is softer for intricate designs. See the karat difference guide.

10 Ways to Save on Wedding Gold

    1. Start buying early in parts as 24K coins or biscuits, then convert. See best time to buy.
    2. Exchange old family gold instead of selling it; kaat is usually lower on exchange. Read about kaat on old gold.
    3. Choose hollow or lighter designs that look large but weigh less, but confirm they are not wax-filled.
    4. Negotiate making charges, especially outside peak wedding months.
    5. Pay stones separately: kundan and stones should never be weighed at the gold rate.
    6. Mix real and artificial: many families wear gold for the main nikah set and high-quality artificial pieces for other events.
    7. Consider 18K for diamond or stone-heavy pieces. Check the 18K rate.
    8. Get a detailed receipt with weight, karat, gold value and making charges listed separately.
    9. Test before paying for large orders. See our gold testing guide.
    10. Compare city rates if family lives in different cities: Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad.

    Don’t Forget Zakat

Bridal gold owned by the bride generally counts toward her zakat calculation once it crosses the nisab, according to many scholars. Check the current nisab and use the zakat calculator, and consult your scholar for your situation.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How many tola gold is normal for a Pakistani wedding?

There is no fixed rule. Many middle-class families plan between 5 and 15 tola in total, but it depends entirely on budget and family custom.

Is it cheaper to buy wedding gold in Dubai?

Sometimes the base price and making charges are lower, but customs rules and limits apply. Compare on our Dubai gold rate page.

What is the price of a 1 tola gold ring?

See our gold ring price page for current estimates.

  • Best Time to Buy Gold in Pakistan: Months, Days and Smart Strategies

“Should I buy gold now or wait?” is the most common question Pakistani families ask, especially before a wedding. Nobody can predict the exact bottom, but some times of year and some market conditions are clearly better than others.

Short answer: Buy before demand peaks (well before wedding season and Eid), on days after a price dip rather than after a spike, and spread large purchases over several months instead of buying everything at once.

    Seasonal Patterns in Pakistan

PeriodLocal demandWhat it means for you
Wedding season (roughly Nov to Feb)HighJewellers busy, less room to bargain on making charges
Before EidHigherGift buying adds to demand
Muharram and RamadanLower for weddingsFewer weddings, often a quieter time to order jewellery
Summer monthsModerateOften a good time to plan and pre-order bridal sets

Seasonal demand mostly affects making charges and premiums, not the international price. The base rate still follows world markets and the dollar.

    Market Signals That Favour Buying

    • After a correction: if gold has fallen for several days, buying part of your target is reasonable. Track it on our this week’s gold rate page.
    • When the rupee is stable or strengthening: a firm rupee keeps local gold cheaper.
    • Before expected US rate cuts: gold tends to rise when cuts arrive, though markets often price them in early.

    Signals to Be Careful

    • Right after a big spike caused by sudden news. Prices often cool down within days.
    • Peak wedding weeks, when shops are less flexible on making charges.
    • Buying in a rush without comparing at least two or three shops.

Understand what moves the price in our guide to the factors affecting gold rate.

    Best Day of the Week?

There is no reliable “cheapest day.” Rates change daily with global markets. Weekend rates in Pakistan generally carry over from the last trading update, so there is no special discount on Saturday or Sunday. Focus on the trend, not the weekday.

The Smartest Strategy: Buy in Parts

Instead of trying to time the perfect day, divide your budget. For example, if you need 5 tola for a wedding a year from now:

    1. Buy 1 tola every two to three months.
    2. Buy extra when the price dips noticeably.
    3. Store savings as 24K biscuits or coins, then exchange or melt into jewellery closer to the date.

This averages out your cost and removes the stress of guessing. Our bridal gold budget guide shows how to plan a wedding set step by step.

    Planning Tools

    Frequently Asked Questions

Will gold get cheaper next month?

Nobody can say for sure. Over the long term gold has risen in rupee terms, but short-term dips happen often.

Is it better to buy gold before or after the budget?

If a budget is expected to raise taxes or duties on gold, buying before can help. Otherwise the budget usually has a limited effect on the base rate.

Should I buy gold online in Pakistan?

Only from well-known jewellers with clear return policies, verified weights and printed receipts.

  • Why Gold Prices Go Up and Down in Pakistan: 9 Key Factors

Some weeks the gold rate climbs every single day. Other weeks it drops sharply for no obvious reason. Knowing what drives the price helps you decide when to buy, when to wait and when to sell.

Summary: Pakistan’s gold rate depends on two big things: the international gold price and the rupee-dollar exchange rate. Everything below affects one or both. See the exact formula in our guide on how the gold rate is calculated.

    Global Factors

    1. US interest rates

Gold pays no interest. When the US Federal Reserve raises rates, savings accounts and bonds become more attractive and gold often weakens. When rates are cut, or markets expect cuts, gold usually rises. Fed meetings are among the most important days for gold traders.

    2. The US dollar

Gold is priced in dollars globally. A stronger dollar makes gold more expensive for other countries, which tends to push its dollar price down. A weaker dollar usually lifts gold.

    3. War and geopolitical tension

Gold is a “safe haven.” Conflicts, sanctions, trade wars and political crises push investors toward gold, often causing sharp jumps in a single day.

    4. Central bank buying

Central banks around the world have been major gold buyers in recent years as they diversify reserves away from the dollar. Their steady purchases have been a big reason for gold’s strength.

    5. Global inflation

When prices rise faster than interest rates, people buy gold to protect the value of money. High inflation periods have historically been good for gold.

    Pakistan-Specific Factors

    6. Rupee-dollar exchange rate

This is often the biggest driver for Pakistani buyers. If the rupee falls 5% against the dollar, local gold rises about 5% even if world gold is unchanged. This is why gold has been such an effective hedge for Pakistanis over the long term. Compare global and local trends on our international gold rate page.

    7. Local inflation and economic uncertainty

When Pakistani inflation is high, families move savings into gold instead of holding cash. Higher local demand raises the sarafa premium.

    8. Import costs and smuggling

Pakistan imports most of its gold. Import duties, rules on bringing gold from the Gulf, and cross-border smuggling all affect local supply. When supply is tight, local rates can trade above the international equivalent. See our Dubai vs Pakistan comparison.

    9. Wedding season and festivals

Demand rises before the wedding season (winter) and around Eid. This can lift jewellery prices and premiums. Read our best time to buy gold guide.

    How to Use This Information

    • Track trends, not single days. Use our weekly rate and gold rate history pages.
    • Watch the dollar. A sudden rupee drop usually means higher gold the same day.
    • Do not panic-buy on spikes. Sharp jumps after news are often partly reversed within days.
    • Buy in parts. Spreading purchases over months smooths out ups and downs.

For expert views on where prices could head next, see our gold rate forecast.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the gold rate change every day?

Because world gold prices and the dollar rate both change daily. The sarafa association updates the local rate to match.

Can gold prices fall in Pakistan?

Yes. Gold can fall when the dollar strengthens globally, when US rates rise, or when the rupee recovers. Check yesterday’s rate to see daily changes.

Does silver follow the same factors?

Mostly, but silver also depends on industrial demand. See the silver rate today.

  • Gold Bars vs Jewellery vs Coins: What to Buy for Investment in Pakistan

Gold is Pakistan’s favourite way to protect savings from inflation and a falling rupee. But how you buy it matters almost as much as when. Buying a necklace and buying a 10-tola biscuit can give very different results when you sell.

Quick verdict: For pure investment, choose 24K bars (biscuits) from a reputable dealer. Choose coins for small budgets or gifts. Buy jewellery when you want to wear it, not as your main investment.

    Side-by-Side Comparison

    Gold Bars (Biscuits)

A gold biscuit is a stamped bar of 24K gold, commonly sold in 1 tola, 5 tola and 10 tola sizes. You pay close to the published 24K rate with a small premium, and you can sell back at close to the market rate. Check the latest gold biscuit price.

Pros: lowest cost per gram, easy to value, almost no deduction on sale.
Cons: large minimum amount, need safe storage, fakes exist in the informal market.

    Gold Coins

Coins are a good middle ground. Smaller denominations let you build up gold gradually, for example buying a small coin every month. They make popular wedding and Eid gifts too. See current gold coin prices.

Pros: affordable, easy to gift, high purity.
Cons: slightly higher premium per gram than bars.

    Gold Jewellery

Jewellery carries making charges that you never get back. A typical buyer might pay a significant amount extra per tola for design work, and on selling also face kaat. That combination means gold prices often need to rise noticeably before a jewellery buyer breaks even.

That does not make jewellery a bad purchase. For bridal sets, family heirlooms and everyday wear it is the right choice. Just do not count all of its price as investment value. Browse prices for rings, chains and bangles.

    Example: Same Money, Different Outcomes

Imagine two people each spend about one tola worth of money at a 24K rate of Rs 440,000. One buys a 1-tola biscuit; the other buys 21K jewellery with making charges. If the gold rate rises 10% and both sell:

    Deduction on saleMinimalKaat applied
Typical resultClose to the full 10% gainSmall gain or even a loss

    Where to Buy Safely

    • Buy from established sarafa shops with a proper printed receipt that lists weight, karat and price.
    • For biscuits, prefer recognised refinery stamps and keep the packaging intact.
    • Test unknown items with XRF before paying. Read our guide to checking real gold.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the smallest gold investment in Pakistan?

Small coins and gram-sized pieces are available. Check the rate per gram to see the cost.

Is 22K jewellery better than 21K for investment?

Slightly, because it contains more gold per tola. But making charges still matter more than the karat difference.

Do I pay zakat on investment gold?

Yes, if your total wealth crosses the nisab. Use our zakat on gold calculator.

  • Kaat on Old Gold in Pakistan: How to Sell Gold Without Losing Money

You bought a set for your wedding at the full rate plus making charges. Years later you go to sell it and the jeweller’s offer is far below today’s gold rate. The difference comes from something every Pakistani gold owner should understand: kaat.

What is kaat? Kaat (also called khaar or deduction) is the amount a jeweller subtracts from the weight or value of old gold before buying it. It covers impurities, solder, wear, refining cost and the jeweller’s margin. It is usually quoted in ratti per tola or as a percentage.

    Why Jewellers Deduct Kaat

    • Solder and alloy: jewellery joints use solder that is lower purity than the piece itself.
    • Uncertain karat: without proof, the jeweller assumes lower purity to protect himself.
    • Melting and refining loss: old gold must be melted before reuse, and a little is lost.
    • Stones, wax and lacquer: filled bangles and kundan pieces contain non-gold weight.
    • Profit margin: the buy-back price is always below the selling price.

Units Used: Tola, Masha and Ratti

Traditional Pakistani weights still matter when selling: 1 tola = 12 masha = 96 ratti, and 1 ratti is about 0.12 grams. So a kaat of “2 ratti per tola” means about 2% of the weight is deducted. Check current values on our rate per ratti and rate per masha pages.

    Worked Example

Suppose you sell 2 tola of 21K jewellery, the 21K rate is Rs 385,000 per tola, and the jeweller applies a kaat of 3 ratti per tola.

    StepCalculationResult
    Total kaat3 ratti × 2 tola6 ratti
    Kaat in tola6 ÷ 960.0625 tola
    Net weight paid for2 − 0.06251.9375 tola
    Amount you receive1.9375 × 385,000Rs 745,938
    Lost to kaat0.0625 × 385,000Rs 24,063

Kaat rates vary a lot between shops, which is why comparing offers can easily be worth tens of thousands of rupees.

    Selling vs Exchanging

Most jewellers apply lower kaat when you exchange old gold for new jewellery from the same shop, because they earn making charges on the new piece. If you plan to buy anyway, exchange can be the better deal. If you need cash, shop around.

    9 Tips to Reduce Kaat

    1. Bring the original receipt. The shop that sold it often gives the best buy-back terms.
    2. Know the karat. Get an XRF test first so nobody can claim it is lower. See our hallmark guide.
    3. Check today’s rate before you go. Use our old gold rate and buying vs selling rate pages.
    4. Get at least three quotes. Ask each shop for the kaat in ratti per tola and the final amount in writing.
    5. Remove stones yourself if possible. Or insist stone weight is measured and subtracted separately, not charged as gold kaat.
    6. Watch the scale. Make sure it is zeroed and weighs in grams or tola visibly.
    7. Do not sell filled pieces as solid. Hollow or wax-filled bangles will be weighed after cutting; know this beforehand.
    8. Sell bars and coins instead of jewellery when possible. Biscuits and coins carry little or no kaat.
    9. Avoid desperate timing. Selling on a day the rate has spiked up is better than after a fall. Watch the weekly trend.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is kaat applied on 24K gold bars?

Usually very little, because bars are already pure and stamped. Jewellery carries the highest kaat.

    Is kaat legal?

Yes. It is a normal trade practice, but it must be disclosed. Always ask for the calculation in writing.

Do I get making charges back when I sell?

No. Making charges are lost when you sell jewellery. This is why jewellery is a weaker investment than bars. Read our bars vs jewellery vs coins guide.

  • Gold Hallmark Stamps Explained: 999, 916, 875 and 750 Meaning

Turn over a gold ring or look at a chain’s clasp and you will often find tiny numbers like 916 or 21K. These stamps tell you how much pure gold is in the piece, which directly decides how much it is worth today and how much you will get when you sell it.

    In short: the three-digit number is gold content out of 1,000. 916 = 91.6% gold = 22K. 875 = 87.5% = 21K. 750 = 75% = 18K. 999 = 99.9% = 24K.

    VermeilGold plating over silver

A piece showing 18K GP is not 18K gold. It is plated with 18K gold, and its gold value is almost nothing.

    Is Hallmarking Compulsory in Pakistan?

Unlike India or the UAE, Pakistan does not have a widely enforced national hallmarking system. Most stamps you see are the jeweller’s own mark, not an independent certification. That means:

    • A stamp is useful information but not a guarantee.
    • Your receipt stating karat and weight matters more than the stamp.
    • For high-value purchases, ask for an XRF karat test before paying.

    Gulf Hallmarks You May See

Jewellery bought in Dubai or Saudi Arabia usually carries official assay marks along with 916 or 875. These are generally more reliable than unmarked local pieces. Compare costs on our Dubai vs Pakistan and Saudi vs Pakistan comparison pages.

    Other Marks on Jewellery

    • Shop initials or logo: the maker’s mark, useful if you return to the same jeweller.
    • KDM: an older term for cadmium solder; not a purity mark.
    • Year letters or symbols: some foreign hallmark systems include them.

    How Stamps Affect Selling Price

When you sell, the jeweller pays based on actual gold content, minus deductions. A clear karat stamp plus the original receipt usually means a lower kaat (deduction) and a smoother sale. Unmarked items are often tested and priced conservatively. See today’s old gold rate.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Is 916 gold 22K or 24K?

    916 is 22K gold, meaning 91.6% pure.

    Is 875 gold good?

Yes. 875 (21K) is the most common jewellery standard in Pakistan and the Gulf. It is strong enough for daily wear and keeps good resale value.

Why is there no stamp on my jewellery?

Many Pakistani karigars do not stamp pieces. That does not mean it is fake. Use your receipt or an XRF test to confirm.

Can I check gold at home?

Yes, roughly. Read our guide to checking real gold at home.

  • How to Check Real Gold at Home in Pakistan: 8 Simple Tests

With gold above Rs 4 lakh per tola, being sold fake or under-karat jewellery is an expensive mistake. Gold-plated items, “Saudi gold” sold without receipts and 18K pieces passed off as 21K are common complaints in Pakistani markets. The good news: a few simple home tests can catch most obvious fakes in minutes.

Important: Home tests can tell you if something is probably not gold. They cannot tell you the exact karat. For that you need an XRF (karat) machine, which most big sarafa markets have for a small fee.

    1. Look for a Karat Stamp

Check the inside of rings, the clasp of chains and the back of pendants. Common stamps are 999 or 24K, 916 or 22K, 875 or 21K and 750 or 18K. Stamps like GP, GF, GEP, RGP or HGE mean gold-plated or gold-filled, not solid gold. Read our full hallmark stamps guide.

Note: a stamp is easy to fake, and many genuine Pakistani pieces have no stamp at all. Treat it as a first clue, not proof.

    2. The Magnet Test

Gold is not magnetic. Hold a strong magnet (a fridge magnet is often too weak; use a neodymium magnet) near the piece. If it jumps to the magnet, it contains iron or nickel and is not solid gold. If it does not react, it may be gold, but plenty of fake metals are also non-magnetic.

    3. The Water (Float) Test

Drop the item into a glass of water. Real gold is very dense (about 19.3 g/cm³ for 24K) and sinks straight to the bottom. Items that float or hover are not solid gold. Rust or discolouration after soaking is another red flag.

    4. The Ceramic Scratch Test

Gently rub the piece on the unglazed underside of a ceramic tile or cup. Real gold leaves a golden-yellow streak. A black or grey streak suggests fake metal. This test leaves a tiny mark, so do it on a hidden edge.

    5. The Vinegar Test

Place a few drops of white vinegar (sirka) on the item and wait 10 to 15 minutes. Real gold will not change colour. If the spot turns dark, green or black, the item is likely plated or mixed with base metals.

    6. The Skin Test

Wear the item against your skin for a few hours, especially in warm weather. Fake metals often leave a green or black mark. Real gold rarely does, although some people react to the copper in low-karat gold.

    7. Weight and Size Check

Gold is heavy. A gold chain feels noticeably heavier than a similar-looking artificial one. If you know the weight on the receipt, weigh it on an accurate digital scale. Convert with our tola to gram tool, or check masha and ratti rates for small items.

    8. Check the Edges for Wear

Look closely with your phone camera zoomed in at edges, clasps and high-contact spots. If a different coloured metal shows through where the piece rubs, it is plated.

    Tests You Should Avoid

    • Biting: damages the item and tells you little.
    • Nitric acid kits at home: acid testing works, but the chemicals are dangerous to handle without training. Let a jeweller do it.
    • Flame/lighter test: unreliable and can damage stones, lacquer or soldered joints.

The Only Reliable Way: XRF Karat Testing

An XRF machine reads the metal composition in under a minute without damaging the piece. It shows the exact gold percentage, for example 87.4% (21K). Ask for a printed slip. This is the best protection when buying second-hand gold or before selling old gold.

What to Do If Your Gold Is Fake or Under-Karat

    1. Get an XRF printout as evidence.
    2. Return to the seller with your original receipt. A reputable jeweller will refund or exchange.
    3. If they refuse, you can complain to your local consumer court, which handles disputes over defective goods.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does real gold stick to a magnet?

No. Pure gold is not magnetic. If it sticks strongly, it is not solid gold.

Can I test gold karat at home?

Not accurately. Home tests only flag fakes. Use an XRF machine at a sarafa market for the exact karat.

    Is “Saudi gold” always 21K?

No. The name is used loosely in Pakistan. Always test and get the karat written on your receipt. Compare prices on our Saudi vs Pakistan gold rate page.

  • How Is the Gold Rate in Pakistan Calculated? Formula With Worked Example

Every morning, jewellers in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad update one number that millions of Pakistanis check: the gold rate per tola. It can look random, rising Rs 3,000 one day and dropping Rs 2,000 the next. In reality the price follows a simple formula. Once you understand it, you can estimate tomorrow’s rate yourself and spot when a jeweller is quoting too high.

Quick answer: Pakistan’s gold rate = (international gold price per ounce in USD × USD/PKR rate × 0.375) + local premium. The 0.375 converts one troy ounce into one tola. Lower karats are then priced by purity: 22K = 91.67%, 21K = 87.5%, 18K = 75% of the 24K rate.

The Four Ingredients of the Gold Rate

    1. International spot price (USD per troy ounce)

Gold is traded worldwide in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 grams). This spot price is set by trading in London, New York and Asian markets around the clock. When you hear “gold hit a record high,” this is the number being discussed. Pakistan imports nearly all of its gold, so this global price is the foundation of the local rate.

    2. The dollar rate (USD to PKR)

Because gold is priced in dollars, the rupee’s value matters as much as gold itself. If gold stays flat internationally but the rupee weakens by 1%, the local gold rate rises by roughly 1%. Jewellers usually look at the open-market dollar rate rather than the interbank rate, because that is closer to what importers actually pay.

    3. Unit conversion (ounce to tola)

Pakistan sells gold by the tola, which equals 11.6638 grams. One tola is 0.375 of a troy ounce (11.6638 ÷ 31.1035). Use our tola to gram converter for any other weight.

    4. Local premium (sarafa margin)

The All Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association publishes the reference rate each day. It usually sits slightly above or below the pure converted price, reflecting import costs, local demand, supply shortages and wedding-season buying. This gap is called the premium (or discount when local prices are lower).

    The Formula

    24K rate per tola = Spot price (USD/oz) × USD/PKR × 0.375 + premium

    24K rate per gram = Spot price (USD/oz) × USD/PKR ÷ 31.1035 + premium per gram

    24K rate per 10 grams = rate per gram × 10

    Worked Example

The figures below are illustrative, chosen to be close to recent market levels, to show how the maths works.

    Spot goldGiven$4,150 / oz
    Dollar rateGivenRs 282
    Price per ounce in PKR4,150 × 282Rs 1,170,300
    Price per tola1,170,300 × 0.375Rs 438,863
    Add premium+ Rs 2,000Rs 440,863

That lands within a few hundred rupees of the actual sarafa rate. Check today’s real figure on our live gold rate page.

How 22K, 21K and 18K Rates Are Worked Out

Lower-karat gold contains other metals (usually copper and silver) for strength. Its price is the 24K rate multiplied by its gold content:

    KaratGold purityMultiply 24K rate byExample (24K = Rs 440,000)
    24K99.9%1.000Rs 440,000
    22K91.67%0.9167Rs 403,348
    21K87.5%0.875Rs 385,000
    18K75%0.750Rs 330,000

Why the Jeweller’s Price Is Higher Than the Rate

The published rate is for raw gold. When you buy jewellery, the bill also includes:

    • Making charges (mazdoori): labour cost, charged per tola or as a percentage. See our making charges guide.
    • Wastage or polish: some shops add a small weight for gold lost during crafting.
    • Stones and kundan: these should be priced separately, never at the gold rate.

Our gold price calculator lets you add making charges to see the real final price.

Why Rates Can Differ Between Cities

Karachi’s sarafa rate is the national reference, but smaller markets sometimes add a few hundred rupees for transport and lower volume. Check your city: Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan, Peshawar and Quetta.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Who decides the gold rate in Pakistan?

The All Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association announces a daily reference rate based on international prices and the dollar rate. Jewellers across the country follow it.

Why did gold rise in Pakistan when the world price fell?

Usually because the rupee weakened against the dollar on the same day, or local supply was tight, raising the premium.

Is the tola rate for 24K or 22K?

The headline rate is normally for 24K. Most jewellery in Pakistan is 21K or 22K, so it is priced lower per tola before making charges.

How many grams are in one tola?

One tola is 11.6638 grams. Ten grams is about 0.857 tola.
